Pharmacy Benefit Guide

How drug benefits work

Premera members have many different drug benefit options with their plans. You pay a designated copay or coinsurance (the fixed amount you pay at the time of service), depending on the tier* the drug is assigned to. If you're not sure what prescription coverage you have, check your benefits booklet for complete details, or contact customer service.

You can check your ID card to see your copay or coinsurance for each drug tier.

*Drugs are placed into each tier based on decisions made by our Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Committee. This team of community doctors and pharmacists meets regularly to collaboratively review the most current medical studies and make updates to our preferred drug list.

Drug benefit tiers

With a four-tier drug benefit, your prescription medications fall into one of four categories or “tiers.” Each tier has a different copay or coinsurance.

Preventive drug benefit

Many drug plans, including HSA-qualified plans, cover preventive drugs and make the drugs available at lower or no out-of-pocket cost. This ensures access to medications that help treat certain conditions, as specified by the Affordable Care Act or IRS guidelines. To see if your drug is included on your plan’s preventive drug list, sign in to your online Premera account and check your prescription coverage.

Managing multiple drugs

Sometimes chronic conditions are treated with several medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins or herbal supplements. Taking multiple medications can increase the risk of drug duplication, interactions, adverse side effects, and cost.

Here are steps you can take to manage your medications, from our Medication Safety Program.

Exclusive home delivery

Some plans require the use of our exclusive home delivery service, also known as mandatory mail order, for ongoing use of chronic medications. First, find out which drugs are part of exclusive home delivery on the lists. Second, ask your employer if they require mandatory mail order for some medications (not all employers require this).
